Everyone Kept Recommending Roy’s

They weren’t wrong…
Using Video to Create the Post…
A New Trick For Us
Hi, with this post, I want to try something different. I want to try making the post through video and then having the text kind of fill in the rest of the post for you. Now we started Living Hutch, the website, last year, and we started reviewing a ton of the businesses that we would visit or interact with here in the community as a way to pay it forward.
Typically, after I would review a restaurant, especially a restaurant that had burgers or barbecue, somebody would inevitably post a comment in the Facebook saying, you should go to Roy’s. Well, we finally went to Roy’s and it was awesome. So Hayden and I took a lunch together one day. He was off from school.
And we drove over to Roy’s. And it’s important that if you want to visit Roy’s, you get there early, because you don’t know how long they’re going to be open. I’m an avid cyclist, and I’ve bicycled by this place at least a dozen times when it wasn’t open. So to get there while it was open, and while they had a full selection of meats to choose from, was important.
When we got there, there were a couple of families in there already eating, and it was obvious that it was a very family-friendly establishment. The building’s old, and the parking lot is a little sketchy. But when you get inside, the smells are awesome, the atmosphere is classic. Some people would say that it’s old, or that the atmosphere, you know, lacks certain modern things.

But if you’re going somewhere for authentic barbecue and you walk into this old building and you hang out inside this restaurant, you probably aren’t thinking it’s old or dilapidated or falling apart or any of those things. You’re probably thinking, man, this place is cool. And when you look around, you can see the artwork inside that inspires you or takes you back to a time before today, which is very nice.
My son and I each ordered varied plates of food. So I got brisket and hot links, my son got something with pork, and I think he got turkey as well. We sat, we ate, the portions were huge. We were super full by the time that we had left, and one of the things that I had noticed was they give you the meats at the counter, but off to the side of the counter is their fountain drink machine.
and then kind of a salad bar. And so we each had, you know, beans out of the crock pot and items out of the salad bar. And we were able to complete a full meal for ourselves, kind of on that salad bar process, along with the meats that they provided right at the counter. When we sat and ate, uh, we had a wonderful time.
The meal was awesome. The people inside the restaurant were awesome. And let me take this as a sidebar. One of the things that we love about moving to Hutchinson, Kansas, is the people. Everywhere that we go we run into positive, open, maybe happy is the word, but we come from an area of the country where people walk around with an extra weight on their shoulders, where the economy beats them down a little bit, and maybe a place where politics can sometimes override new relationships.

And so to move to a place like Kansas and have people be so much more friendly and open is such a relief, and we’re still trying to get used to that since just moving here last year. Some people might ask, is Roy’s a place you would recommend to friends and family? Well, bar none, Roy’s is a place I’m recommending to friends and family.
The meat was so tender, so moist. So well prepared. It was done extremely well. Not only that, when we walked in, we were greeted by a lady behind the register who was just over-the-top friendly. She was wonderful. We had just met her so we don’t have a history with her, but I heard her have discussions with other people in the restaurant and she would ask, how is so and so or how so and so doing, or I haven’t seen so and so in a long time.
And it was very obvious to me that. This restaurant is very connected to the community, which is a big big big plus for me when I’m reviewing these restaurants So the help is amazing. In fact, I found out later that that amazing lady behind the register is the owner At least that’s what someone else told me.
So The staff was amazing. The food was amazing , the people inside were fantastic. The decor on the walls is nostalgic and takes you back in time, which I think is a great feature. The only thing that I criticize about these barbecue places is the silverware, the utensils, and the plates. I really, really wish that they would just charge an extra dollar per meal and give you a plate and silverware and have a dishwasher in the back that takes care of that. I don’t like eating with plastic ware and paper plates, but I’ve also come to understand that a lot of pizza places and barbecue places operate this way and it’s kind of traditional.

So on one hand, I’m bragging about the food and how awesome and wonderful it was, on the other hand, I just wish the presentation was a little bit better, but That’s small potatoes in a big world full of barbecue. All right, that’s it. I hope this experiment works and we’ll see you in our next review.
